Re-greening deserts

"I have seen things everyone should see" filmmaker, ecologist and researcher John D. Liu opened his talk during the Strawberry Earth Academy workshops. Liu has been documenting large-scale ecosystem restoration projects in China, Africa, South America and the Middle East, highlighting the enormous benefits to people and planet of undertaking these efforts globally.

Yep. It's truly possible to rehabilitate damaged ecosystems, John D. Liu shows in the episode 'Regreening the desert / Green gold' of VPRO Tegenlicht. In the documentary we see Liu traveling the world and pointing out possibilities in re-greening deserts. The episode has won the Special Prize Expo 2015 during the 65th Prix Italia in September 2013.

"This situation, with this population and economics, can't be sustained" Liu said. "We can't separate ecology and economy. Because what serves human beings are natural systems." Hopefully the Strawberry Earth Academy fellows will come up with a bunch of new solutions and ideas. As soon as possible.

Liu: "We have to act now. As a species. We're all Africans anyway. Related to each other genetically." That's why it's so important to team up. Join forces. Not just the Academy fellows, but all of us. Liu can't fix things on his own. As he puts it: "it's not me to do this. It's on humanity. I'm planning to die."
